Psychoanalyzing the average PF Jung viewer
Nobody loves describing my audience as a meme confederation more than I do.
One of the most unique features of my YouTube channel is that it is made up almost entirely of people that hate my guts.
Just kidding.
But if you are a regular viewer of mine, you’ll probably notice that the top comments on any video of mine where I discuss controversial topics will usually be quite critical of me.
This is a double-edged sword.
On the one hand, it’s ONLY MILDLY annoying to have my comment sections diluted by a few (unfortunately) well-crafted catty insults, a few of which I know are probably written by some 13-year-old Destiny fan just absolutely wrecking me on my own turf.
Nevermind the amount of FD Signifier fans who are not happy when white people complain about being told there’s too many of us in Ohio.
I also don’t deny for a moment that there is a subset of people whose perceptions of what I am saying are altered by the negative comments on a video (although I’m not sure that is the kind of person I care about reaching to begin with).
On the other hand, there are a number of positive aspects to this audience dynamic.
First off, if my goal is to positively alter the discourse and change people’s minds, the absolute best audience to have is one that disagrees with you. I can draw attention to ideas and issues that many people would otherwise never be exposed to.
Second, arguably the biggest danger that public figures face today is the subtle but ever-present threat of audience capture. I definitely don’t have that problem. If anything, I am forced to consider what I am saying more so than your average media figure because I know I am going to get roasted by my regular viewers if I slip up.
This also got me thinking about the actual makeup of my audience, and what kind of twisted psycho spends their time listening to my opinions.
The key factions of the PF Jung viewer base
Just as the Confederacy of Independent Systems was made up of different factions like the Trade Federation, Techno Union, and Galactic Banking clan, I suspect the PF Jung viewer base can be broken out into different segments.
The Maps of Meaning Exiles
One of the key constituents of my viewer base are people who are fans of Jordan Peterson’s intellectual work particularly as it relates to psychology and religion.
Some of my best and most consequential videos are the ones where I breakdown Peterson’s key philosophical concepts from Maps of Meaning, and I know a significant portion of my audience is most interested in my “Applied Sociology” videos that center around his work.
As Peterson has gone downhill in recent years, a I know lot of people appreciate that there is still someone like me who is trying to rescue the good ideas from Maps of Meaning and share it with a new audience (one that has likely never encountered those ideas before, as mentioned previously).
For the record, if you’re a fan of my videos breaking down Peterson’s philosophy, I would highly encourage you to check out two of my best videos on the subject from a while ago - The Synthesis of Meaning and Evolution between Peterson and Weinstein and my explanation of Peterson’s “Metaphorical Substrate.”
The Destiny Raiding Party
As a long-time Destiny viewer myself, I know that a good chunk of my audience found me through my conversations with him.
While there are obviously a few members of this faction that like to talk shit whenever possible, I think that most of the people who are regular viewers of both me and Destiny have a generally positive attitude toward me because - however dumb and uninformed I may be - I am quite clearly saying what I genuinely believe to be true.
I also think that a lot of these individuals are morbidly curious about how someone who at least on the face of it seems to possess at least a few IQ points can be so confident in my intellectual defense of doing vibes based analysis.
The Leftist Coalition
For some reason that I still do not understand, Leftists such as CJ the X and FD Signifier find me not only interesting, but worthy of conversing with despite the obvious fact that I am a far-Right crypto fascist.
There is a decent chunk of self-described Leftists in my audience who most likely came across my work through CJ the X, and FD Signifier, and I think they appreciate that I am very keen on criticizing the neoliberal status quo and generally viewing politics through a class analysis.
The Canadian Loyalists
More than two years ago, I tagged Jreg on Twitter with a clip from a video of mine called “Anti-Intellectualism is Based.” Greg shared this with JJ McCullough, and what followed is a storied relationship that started with JJ and I’s first conversation about how I really am an Enlightened Centrist.
Many of my viewers enjoy the Chaos and Order dynamic between JJ and I, and I think a lot of them view me as the proxy for people who are more conservative then them. They don’t really like what I have to say, but they appreciate hearing the perspective of someone like me, who they view as the archetypal white guy.
Another subset of this faction are the Jreg/Horseshoe Theory fans, who probably enjoy the familiar irony poisoning that I exude in many of my videos.
The Dissident Right Assembly
I know there are lot of actual Right-Wingers who watch my content, probably because virtually everyone I talk to is Left-Wing, and the conservatives in my audience enjoy watching me take the Right-Wing stance most of the time to avoid having to do the most boring thing in the world which is just sit there and agree with someone all day.
Because I am willing to have conversations with people from all corners of the memetic landscape, including Christian Nationalists like Andrew Wilson, I think of lot of the dissident Right-Wingers appreciate that I won’t immediately shy away from people who bring up uncomfortable truths about race, gender, immigration, etc.
And while I wouldn’t call these people Dissident Right per se, I know that lot of Right-Wing Christians like my Peterson-esque defense of Christianity. I do genuinely appreciate when good-faith Christians come on my stream and politely encourage me to continue to pursue my relationship with Jesus, which to be clear, I do every time I take psychedelics.
There is no “PF Jung Community” (yet)
One of the things I have always despised in the online politics space is the fact that it can sometimes feel like I am a bystander caught between a bunch of petty memetic warlords sicing their “communities” on each other because of personal drama.
I’ve always sought to avoid becoming this kind of person, and part of that means purposely avoiding developing a “PF Jung community.”
I actually did have a Discord server a while back, but it became way too hard to moderate since I have such an ideologically diverse audience that only has a shared appreciation of me as their common ground (which, believe it or not, is not enough to keep an online political community together).
However, as I attempt to pursue YouTube (and other political/media projects) as a full-time endeavor, I am reconsidering how I might go about building a network instead of a community, per se.
Despite the large number of socially stunted individuals that lurk in my comment sections, I am genuinely humbled and impressed by some of the cool and interesting people that call-in to my streams and share why they appreciate my work.
At some point in the near-future, I will likely resurrect my now decommissioned Patreon page to make what I am doing more sustainable. I want to keep my Substack free and I will kill myself before I ever do an ad read like the ones that Ben Shapiro does every three and a half minutes, but I am certainly willing and appreciative to accept donations from viewers.
With proper top-down authoritarian control and direction by me, I think I can create a Patreon page that provides actual value - not just for me - but for my viewers.
We’ll see.
errmmmm based hoppean minarchist here. i like your funny shit and analysis of the meme/political culture or whatever you call those videos. love your videos man, keep it up, im radical centrist at heart!
As a socially stunted maps of meaning exile I can confirm that everyone that comments under a PF Jung video is an autist who hates Paul.
